Jim Larrañaga, Head Coach, University of Miami Men’s Basketball Team. In just his second year at the helm of the University of Miami men’s basketball program, he led the Hurricanes to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season and tournament titles, a No. 2 national ranking (the highest ever in program history), and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. By the time the astonishing 2012-2013 season ended, Larrañaga had added some impressive hardware to his trophy case: the ACC, Associated Press, and Naismith Coach of the Year Awards, as well as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award. Over the course of UM’s ACC Championship season, Larrañaga’s senior-laden team knocked off such perennial powers as Duke, North Carolina, and Michigan State en route to a 29-7 record. At a school known for its storied football program, hoops hysteria swept campus. Sellout crowds for basketball games at BankUnited Center became the norm.
