Leann is the mother of a Marine Corp veteran. She has 3 children but speaks about the journey of her son Tony, born in 1989. Tony did not enjoy school and was difficult, and while in high school, entered a 6 month disciplinary military program. His experience there led him to the join the Marine Corps. In 2008, he went to boot camp at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, then Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in San Diego, then he was deployed to Afghanistan as communications radio operator. In 2010, after 4 years, he left active duty due to a back injury from an IED accident. Tony is very proud to be a Marine veteran. Leann is sad about how our country treats veterans and the failings of the VA, and advocates for better treatment of all military personnel. Her son suffers from PTSD but is doing better after seeing a psychiatrist. At the time of this interview, Tony is age 27 with a companion dog and enjoys his job. Leann said her faith and God gave her strength and that her husband is writing a book from their son’s letters and military experience.
