Interview with Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara (1987-), Cuban performance artist and dissident. Known for public performances that criticize the Cuban government and its policies toward artistic expression, he has been arrested over 50 times for his performances in violation of Decree 349. In 2021, he was included in Time Magazine's list of most influential people. He received the Oxi Day Courage Award (2021) from the Oxi Day Foundation in Washington, DC; the Premio López-Pons de Derechos Humanos (2021) from the Centro Latinoamericano para la Nonviolencia; and the Prince Claus Impact Award (2022) from the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development in the Netherlands. His work has been presented in various venues including the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
In 2022, he was sentenced to five years in prison for "contempt, defamation, and public disorder charges."
