Marine Corp veteran Merbebe Solomon and his girlfriend, Nicki Righter, speak about the after-effects of Merbebe’s military experience. Merbebe was born in Ethiopia, went to Syria, then India, and finally settled in the US at age 6. He attempted college in 1991/92 but then enlisted in the Marine Corp at age 20. He said it was a great experience and developed structure, discipline and a positive influence on his life. He also wanted to give back to the U.S. He was a Marine for approximately 15 years and spent time in Iraq; however, he was injured in an auto accident and forced to leave the Marines. He explains he was unprepared for the transition from military to civilian life, going from teamwork to being solo. He claims he experienced PTSD and was missing a support system from the VA, as the VA was not effective, and he was ready to end his life until he met Nikki. Merbebe said having a companion to talk with and understand, saved his life. He is out of the military 6 years to the date of this interview and continues to do better.
