Machado’s experience while exiled has been compiled from personal correspondence, newspaper accounts, and documents from the U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. State Department obtained via the Freedom of Information Act.
The presentation is followed by a conversation and Q&A with the author moderated by historian and political scientist, Daniel Pedreira, Ph.D.
The
Gerardo Machado y Morales Papers were donated to the Cuban Heritage Collection in 1992 by Francisco X. Santeiro, Machado’s great-grandson.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Francisco X. Santeiro was born in Cuba and raised in the United States from the age of six after his family went into exile. He holds master’s degrees from the University of Miami and Florida International University, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida.
For over 30 years, Santeiro worked in the international transportation and logistics industry, focused on the Latin America region. He retired recently, finishing his career as director of Government Affairs for FedEx’s Latin America and Caribbean Division. As of January 2022, he assumed the role of executive director for CLADEC, the Conference of Latin American & Caribbean Express Companies, the regional express industry association.
Santeiro has had articles published in the Miami Herald, Latin Trade, Diario Las Américas, and Florida Shipper and other trade magazines.
Santeiro is a founding member of the AMIGOS of the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami. He currently serves as chairperson of the board of this citizen support and advisory group. He also serves as vice-president of the University of Florida Latin American Studies Alumni Board.
Santeiro lives in Miami with his wife and has three children.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Daniel I. Pedreira is a political scientist, historian, and researcher. His work focuses on political institutions, international relations, and politics during the Cuban Republic (1902-1959). He earned a Ph.D. in political science from Florida International University, a master’s degree in Peace Operations from George Mason University, and a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from the University of Miami.
Dr. Pedreira is the author of "El Último Constituyente: El desarrollo político de Emilio 'Millo' Ochoa" (Aduana Vieja, 2013), "An Instrument of Peace: The Full-Circled Life of Ambassador Guillermo Belt Ramírez" (Lexington Books, 2019), and "PEN Club of Cuba Writers in Exile: Foundation, Struggle, and Present" (PEN Club of Cuban Writers in Exile, 2019).
